The Fix: How Nations Survive and Thrive in a World in Decline, by Jonathan Tepperman

We all know the bad news. Our economies are stagnant. Wages are flat and income inequality keeps rising. The Middle East is burning and extremism is spreading. Frightened voters are embracing populist outsiders and angry nationalists. And no wonder: we are living in an age of unprecedented, irreversible decline—or so we’re constantly being told.         Jonathan Tepperman’s The Fix presents a very different picture. It identifies ten pervasive and seemingly impossible challenges—including immigration reform, economic stagnation, political gridlock, corruption, and Islamist extremism—and shows that, contrary to the general consensus, each has a solution, and not merely a hypothetical one. By taking a close look at overlooked success stories—from countries as diverse as Canada, Botswana, and Indonesia—Tepperman discovers practical advice for problem-solvers of all stripes, making a data-driven case for optimism in a time of crushing pessimism.

In his articles in Foreign Affairs and the Atlantic, Tepperman always manages to make complicated political issues understandable and interesting, without dumbing them down or losing their complexity. In the Fix, Tepperman achieves that difficult balancing act over the course of an entire book, which covers several of the most important and thorny issues that societies face in every corner of the globe. Seldom do you find such important reading so enjoyable.

This book gives practical examples of how issues such as poverty, insecurity and other governance related problems were tackled with a r e verifiable examples. Canada's successful immigration policy, Brazil's attempt to reduce poverty, Singapore's journey away from corruption, Indonesia's struggle with fundamentalism and the United States' pursuit of alternative to energy sources underscore the point that good policies need leaders who are determined to do what is required to achieve success. Leaders who are ready to break boundaries or ignore them.

Who knew that Botswana provided a solution to the “resource curse” or that South Korea provides a template on how to continue economic growth in already well-developed nations? Tepperman in this book helps the reader discover and re-discover countries and leaders, providing a wealth of insights on how to govern effectively along the way.One thing I particularly liked were the anecdotes of the interviews Tepperman did with the foreign leaders covered in the book; like the one where former Brazilian President Lula held Tepperman’s hand for minutes on hand for emphasis, or the one about former Botswana President Masire, who has “an easy laugh that split his face into a thousand creases”.Having spoken to most leaders featured in the book, Tepperman makes sure that his well structured and well-documented policy tales don’t come off as too theoretical; they are peppered with personal insights on how to get things done.Another treasure that comes from reading the book is being taken on a journey to far-away and sometimes inaccessible lands. Tepperman went to visit most of countries he writes about, and so we get to know a little bit more about life in Indonesia, South Korea, Singapore, Botswana, Mexico and Brazil along the way, without having to go there ourselves (though the book gave me inspiration to travel!).Tepperman, finally, never forgets to include data on GDP, economic growth, or international rankings on inequality, crime and corruption. That helps to make international comparisons, measure progress, and bust myths. At the end of his book, Tepperman comes up with 5 key take-aways, a sort of executive summary for policy makers reading this book. They are: “embrace extremity”, dare to act pragmatically, “please all people some of the time”, “govern with guardrails” and “make revolution through evolution”. They are a fair summary, though I would have loved to also see a post scriptum on some other lessons learned, particularly about effective governing structures. Many of the countries featured in the book are illiberal or democratic only in nature. Tepperman deserves praise for daring to look beyond that, and finding problem-solvers in these countries. But he stops short of reflecting on the merits and failures of democracy and capitalism themselves, except for briefly covering Lee Kuan Yew’s idea of “Asian Values”. It would have been interesting to get his take on whether democracy and capitalism in some cases are part of the problem, and other forms of organizing the state part of the solution. All in all though, this is a fantastic book, filled with great insights. It is easy to read and, if you’re interested in international economics and policy making, it should be on your shelf if it isn’t already.

While the necessities of oversimplification to make a readable book are noted, the ideas and examples are well outlined. The ability to chose global examples fits how we all should analyze these problems. Well done.

Ten well documented stories show that even the most profound problems may be overcome when a persistent leadership engages the right people in finding solutions. A really well writen book, on inspite the author does not present some of the dark side of the stories presented. Worth reading.

Every elected official should read this book. I recommend it frequently and even bought a copy for a sibling whose views on pretty much everything differ from mine. On this book, we agree.

I have lived in Asia for over 8 years and was interested how emerging economies develop. This is an excellent book analysed from an economist's point of view.

Great insights. If only we could get politicians to embrace the decisions needed.
